Better Breathing for a Better Tomorrow
introduction.
In teams of four, we are tasked with developing a design proposal and addressing issues related to health and the impacts of the global climate crisis concerning extreme situations. With the design brief being so open, it felt like an opportunity to combine two things I was always passionate about: design and EMS.
challenge.
User needs include a cheap, low-cost solution that is easy and fast to apply at a moment's notice. It also has to be extremely simple and include clear material for the front to allow the user to talk. The groups that need better PPE overall are non-profit groups such as the White Helmets, who have an extremely low budget.
result.
The mask blends the qualities of an enclosed breathing apparatus, an air respirator, and an additive air climbing mask. Wearers won’t get tired as quickly, allowing for longer durations of physical activity, which is useful in escalating situations. This system is extremely valuable in building collapse scenarios, mitigating the risk of long-term health consequences from being in dust plumes for extended periods.
conclusion.
Playing to group members' strengths allowed each member to maximize time outside the classroom. This also allowed for good group cohesion later in the process and created a system of give-and-take of ideas from the different perspectives of each member's role.
